We depend on water for everything from staying hydrated to keeping clean, but water can be as destructive as it is a source of life. Leaking water can seep through cracks and crevices of your floors and walls. Over time, it can rot wood, foster mold growth, degrade metals, and compromise the structural integrity of your building.

Early Detection Saves Time, Money, and Health

Water leaks are often silent problems that can go unnoticed for long periods of time. While a sudden burst pipe may be obvious, slow leaks can quietly wreak havoc behind (or beneath) the scenes.

You are probably already thinking of the cost of the wasted water, but one of the most significant dangers of water leaks is the damage they can inflict on your building's structure. Leaking water can cause wood to rot, make drywall swell or crumble, and weaken your foundation. Over time, this can compromise the structural integrity of your home!

Another issue to note is mold and mildew growth. Mold thrives in moist, dark environments, and a water leak provides the perfect breeding ground. Once mold takes hold, it can spread quickly through your walls, floors, and ceilings. These fungi can lead to serious health issues, especially for people with allergies or respiratory problems.

How to Identify a Water Leak in Your Property

While hiring a plumber is the most reliable way to find hidden leaks, there are several things you can do to spot early warning signs yourself. Here are some common indicators that you may have a water leak:

  • If you notice your water bill is unusually high but your water usage hasn’t changed,
  • If you experience a drop in water pressure, especially when using multiple fixtures at once,
  • If there are water stains on the ceiling, damp or discolored patches on walls, or warping in your floors,
  • If you catch mold or mildew inside your home,
  • If you hear the sound of running water even when all your fixtures are off, or
  • If there are wet patches in your yard or water pooling on the surface when it hasn’t rained.

To catch hidden leaks, you can turn off all plumbing fixtures and appliances then go out to read the water meter. If it is still running, then you’ve got a serious leak. Otherwise, wait 15 minutes to see if the reading changes. If so, then you’ve probably got a slow leak somewhere.

When to Call the Plumbers

Plumbing leaks are nothing to take lightly, and you shouldn’t have to wait through the weekend or holidays for water leak repair. If you need a local plumber, then call High Speed Plumbing to have a uniformed plumber dispatched to your home or business as soon as possible.
